Modelling a Portrait in Clay

Course summary

This course is an exciting introduction for beginners, as well as an opportunity for those with some previous experience, to gain or develop basic clay sculpture skills.

You will rediscover the beauty of the human face and anatomy over the term. In this class, you will explore how to observe faces and heads – how to see their differences and similarities, and in turn learn, how to translate this understanding into a sculpture.

Artistic knowledge is not necessary, and beginners are welcome.

What you will learn

  • basic clay modelling techniques specific for sculpture
  • an understanding of tools and materials suitable for sculpting with clay
  • how to judge and transfer proportions from 2D to 3D

  • basic anatomical knowledge of the head and positioning of the element’s volume

  • how to progress from simple shapes to more complex forms
  • to develop your own ideas for the sculpture

What you need to bring

  • drink bottle
  • apron
  • wear casual/older clothes and covered or closed-in shoes – clay can get messy!

About the Tutor

Ilona is a sculptor, creativity coach and art therapist with a vision to support students in creating their own unique work. Ilona has been a creative professional for almost three decades and after many years of focusing on art, international exhibitions, art fairs, and everything that’s involved with being a professional artist.
