Theory and Practical Laughter Yoga Workshop

Course summary

Laughter yoga is a breathing and light movement based laughter therapy created by Indian doctor Madan Kataria in 1995 that anyone can be a part of. No jokes required! Laughing makes us feel better and has known therapeutic values. This workshop will be a mix of theory and practice as an introduction to the modality. Suitable for people from 18 to 108, activities can be adapted for people who need to be seated or prefer not to touch others (high fives).  It is laughing with people and not an any one thing in particular. ‘We’re not laughing because we are happy: we are happy because we are laughing’ – William James, American psychologist and philosopher

What you will need

  • Mobile phone to check in using QR app
  • Comfortable clothes – there will some movement involved
  • Water bottle – laughing is thirsty work

What we will cover

  • Theory and history of laughter yoga
  • low impact aerobic activity (can be seated)
  • light hearted and playful approach
  • phrases and movements that you can use anytime

What you will get

  • Decreased Stress
  • Increased oxygen levels similar to deep breathing exercises (but more fun)
  • Produces your body’s own  natural feel good chemicals (endorphins, oxytocin, dopamine, serotonin)

About the tutor

Jacci Pillar is an anthropologist, comedian and certified laughter yoga leader. This is their heart work, as a passionate believer in the healing power of laughter. Their PhD thesis is titled “You Can’t Laugh at That! The Politics of Laughter”
