Acrylic Painting for Beginners

Course summary

Acrylic painting is a versatile and rewarding medium, suitable for artists of all skill levels. This introductory course is ideal for beginners looking to explore painting for the first time, as well as those wishing to build on existing skills and deepen their creative practice.

Guided by an experienced instructor, you’ll learn a range of essential acrylic painting techniques, including colour mixing, brushwork, composition, and texture. Through step-by-step demonstrations and hands-on exercises, you’ll progress from freehand sketching to creating your own expressive artworks, developing both the confidence and technical skills needed to bring your creative vision to life.

No experience necessary.

What you need to bring

  • Canvas panel or canvas paper pad – 30cm x 40cm (12-inch x 16-inch) or similar sizes
  • Acrylic paint set or single tubes – 22ml, 50ml or 75 ml optional
    1. Red (Cadmium Red or Crimson Red)
    2. Blue (Cobalt Blue, Primary Blue, or Ultramarine Blue)
    3. Yellow (Medium Yellow or Lemon Yellow)
    4. Burnt Sienna
    5. White (Titanium White or Lead White)
    6. Black (Carbon Black or Mars Black)
  • Brush set or single brushes for acrylic painting (Size 4 to 10)
    1. Flat brush x 2 (any small one, and large one. E.g. Size 2 and size 12)
    2. Round brush x 2 (any small one, and large one. E.g. Size 2 and size 12)
    3. Mop brush x 1 (size 3 or your choice)
    4. Fan brush x 1 (any size, recommended size: 6)
    5. Liner Brush x 1 (size 0)
    6. Optional – Filbert brushes and Angles brushes
  • Palette knife
  • Small plastic or wooden palette – It can be a disposable paper plate

About the tutor

Jun Liu is an exhibiting artist and active member of several artist societies. In addition to her academic background in art history, she has undertaken extensive practical training in classical drawing, life drawing, watercolour, acrylic, and oil painting. After three years of teaching watercolour painting to adult learners, Jun is excited to expand her teaching practice into acrylic painting and share her passion for art with the community.
