Course summary

You’ll learn how to work with hammer and tongs, heating and shaping glowing metal until it comes alive as a decorative snake. It’s a hands‑on, creative experience that invites you to slow down, feel the rhythm of the forge, and discover how satisfying it is to turn raw steel into something expressive and unique. Whether you’re brand new to blacksmithing or already curious about the craft, this is a welcoming way to explore the fire, the tools, and your own creativity.

What you need to bring

  • wear long sleeve and pants of natural fibers (e.g. cotton/wool)
  • hair tied up
  • closed – toe shoes
  • safety glasses and leather gloves are provided, but you’re welcome to bring your own if you prefer not to use the tutor’s shared supply
  • water bottle

Rob Nansen (Jesses Stump Blacksmithing and Bush Furniture) is a Melbourne-based artisan who works with iron and wood using traditional hand tools and techniques. Along with creating original pieces, Rob facilitates beginner workshops so others can also experience these slow and meditative crafts.
